NBSLS Document Literacy and Information Skills

November 13, 2007

The first draft of the NBSLS document Literacy and Information Skills for School Library Programs created by the Curriculum Project 2006/2007 participants is here!

Please review this skills document Literacy and Information Skills for School Library Programs DRAFT.  Check back often to see what other project participants are saying.  At the end of November comments and suggestions from the blog will be collated and considered for inclusion into the draft document.  The Blog will then be opened up to Liaisons and they will be able to view the archived comments from the Curriculum Project committee and offer additional comments.

Remember the document was based on the AASL Information Literacy Standards. The final document was released at the October 2007 AASL Conference. For your reference we are providing the link to the AASL Learning Standards document.

Is there any way we can look at these again in light of the new AASL standards document? I think what you have here is important but not very reflective of 21st century learning skills. This is a thoughtful reflection on what we have been doing. I think we need to be more visionary and have these reflect the best of what we’ve been doing with what we need to be doing (and that means all of us, even those folk stuck in the 1990s - or earlier.) I think this should be a document of “change,” not one only of past practices, no matter how reflective of best practice.

I think the committee did a very good job. The chart is very clear and it is easy to identify the information literacy skills being introduced, taught and mastered at various levels.
